One of the most overwhelming parts of building a home is realizing just how many decisions there are to make.
Cabinetry. Countertops. Tile. Plumbing. Lighting. Flooring. Paint. Hardware. Appliances. And somehow, all of them need to work together.
The good news? You don’t have to make all of those decisions at once.
There is an order to the process, and having a plan makes the entire experience much more manageable.
1. Start With the Big Picture
Before we start choosing individual finishes, we establish the overall design direction.
What should the home feel like? What aesthetic are we working toward? How do you want the spaces to function?
This becomes our roadmap for everything that follows.
2. Floor Plan + Cabinetry
Once we understand the overall direction, we work through the spaces themselves.
Cabinetry is one of the biggest early decisions because it affects so many other selections—and because it needs to be coordinated with the floor plan, appliances, plumbing, and electrical.
This is also where we make sure the spaces function the way you need them to.
3. Appliances + Plumbing
Appliances and plumbing fixtures need to be considered early because their dimensions and installation requirements can affect cabinetry, electrical, and plumbing locations.
This is not the time to say, “We’ll figure that out later.”
Later can get expensive.
4. Countertops + Tile
Once cabinetry and the larger elements are established, we can start layering in countertops, backsplash, tile, and other materials.
These selections are where the design really starts to come together.
We’re not choosing each material independently. We’re making sure they work together with the cabinetry, flooring, lighting, and overall aesthetic.
5. Lighting + Hardware
Now we can get into the details.
Decorative lighting, plumbing finishes, cabinet hardware, mirrors, and other elements begin to add personality and polish to the spaces.
And because the larger decisions have already been made, these choices are much easier to make with confidence.
6. Paint + Finishing Details
Paint is usually one of the later decisions because it needs to work with everything we’ve already selected.
Then come the finishing layers—window treatments, furnishings, artwork, accessories, and styling.
Those final details are what make the house feel like a home.
The Order Matters
The exact order will vary from project to project, but the principle stays the same:
You can’t make good design decisions in a vacuum.
Each selection affects the next one.
That’s why having a designer involved early isn’t just about having someone help you pick pretty finishes. It’s about having someone who understands how all of the decisions connect—and knows which ones need to happen first.
When you have a plan, building a home becomes a lot less about making thousands of decisions and a lot more about making the right decisions at the right time.
