Is Hiring an Interior Designer Worth It?

When most people think about hiring an interior designer, they picture someone helping them select beautiful furniture, tile, lighting, and finishes. And while that’s certainly part of what I do, it’s only a small piece of the picture.

The real value of hiring an interior designer goes far beyond choosing pretty things. It’s having someone who understands how those selections come together, how they’re executed, and how hundreds of decisions throughout a project affect the finished home.

There’s More to Design Than Good Taste

I work with plenty of clients who have wonderful taste. They know what they love, have Pinterest boards full of inspiration, and can recognize a beautiful space when they see one.

But having good taste and executing a design are two very different things.

When you hire an interior designer, you’re hiring someone to think through the details you may not even realize need to be considered.

For example, that beautiful oversized mirror you’ve been dreaming of? We may need additional blocking inside the wall to support its weight. Want wall-mounted faucets in your bathroom? That plumbing needs to be planned long before the fixtures are installed.

These are the kinds of decisions that need to be communicated to your builder and trades early in the process. Otherwise, what could have been a simple conversation during planning becomes a costly change during construction.

You’re Investing in More Than a Beautiful Home

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that hiring a designer will save you money.

While having a designer involved can certainly help prevent costly mistakes, I don’t believe saving money should be the primary reason you hire one.

Interior design is an investment in professional expertise, your time, and ultimately your home.

There are countless decisions, phone calls, site meetings, and conversations with contractors that happen behind the scenes. Someone has to manage those details, whether that’s you or your designer.

My role is to keep the project organized, communicate the design intent to everyone involved, advocate for my clients, and make sure the vision we’re working toward isn’t lost somewhere along the way.

A Designer Brings a Vision You Haven’t Seen Yet

I love when clients bring inspiration photos to our first meetings. It helps me understand what they’re drawn to and how they envision their home.

But here’s something I always want clients to remember: that beautiful home you saved on Pinterest was likely the result of someone taking the time to dream up something unique.

When you invest in an interior designer, you’re giving someone the opportunity to do the same for you.

My goal isn’t to recreate someone else’s home. It’s to take everything I learn about you, your family, and how you live and develop a design that’s entirely your own.

The Earlier, the Better

One of my biggest recommendations is to involve a designer as early as possible, especially for new construction and major renovations.

I always say you don’t want to be building the ship while you’re already floating along.

When we’re involved early, we can review architectural plans, discuss realistic budgets, coordinate with the builder, and make decisions before construction begins.

The earlier those conversations happen, the more opportunities we have to create something thoughtful without unnecessary changes along the way.

Is It Worth the Investment?

I believe it is, but I also recognize that full-service interior design is a luxury service, and not every project needs the same level of involvement.

Sometimes that means having a designer involved from the very beginning through the final installation. Other times, a consultation or a few hours of professional guidance may be exactly what you need.

Even as a designer, I understand how difficult decisions can become when it’s your own home. Having an experienced outside perspective is incredibly valuable.

Because hiring an interior designer isn’t just about having a beautiful home.

It’s about the journey it takes to get there. The vision that’s uniquely yours, the experience guiding the decisions, and the time invested into creating a home where your family will make memories for years to come.
