What Actually Happens During the Interior Design Process?

If you’ve never worked with an interior designer before, you may have no idea what actually happens after you decide to hire one.

And honestly, that’s okay.

Part of my job is to make the process feel clear and manageable so you don’t feel like you’re constantly trying to figure out what comes next.

Here’s what the process looks like at Graceful Interiors.

1. Inquiry + Consultation

It starts with an inquiry phone call, followed by an in-person consultation.

During our consultation, I want to learn everything.

We’ll talk about the space we’re working on, what isn’t working for you now, what you want the space to become, your aesthetic, your lifestyle, your goals, your timeline, and your budget.

I also want to get to know you. Your home should work for the way you actually live, not just look good in a photograph.

This is also where I answer your questions and make sure we’re a good fit for the project.

2. Estimate + Contract

After our consultation, I prepare an estimate based on the scope of your project.

I present that estimate to you either in person or virtually, answer any questions, and if we’re moving forward, you’ll sign the contract.

From there, the real design work begins.

3. Budget + Design Direction

Before we start making a hundred individual decisions, we establish the bigger picture.

We’ll talk through the budget and overall design direction so we have a clear understanding of where we’re going before we start selecting individual materials and furnishings.

This is important because you can’t make good design decisions in a vacuum. Everything needs to work together.

4. The Design Phase

Think of the design phase as our road map.

I create 2D and 3D drawings for the rooms or home we’re working on so we can visualize the direction before we start making selections.

This is where we work through the layout, proportions, function, and overall aesthetic.

Having this road map helps us stay cohesive throughout the project and keeps us focused on the original design goals.

5. The Selections Phase

Once we have our design direction, we get to go shopping.

Well… I go shopping first.

Before our selections meetings, I’m researching products, sourcing materials, checking lead times, communicating with vendors, getting multiple quotes, and narrowing down options based on your aesthetic, budget, and timeline.

Then I bring those curated options to you so we’re making decisions from a thoughtful selection of choices—not scrolling through thousands of products wondering where to start.

My goal is to do the work before we sit down together.

6. Execution Phase

Once the design and selections are finalized, we move into execution.

For a construction project, this means I’m involved throughout the process with site visits, contractor and vendor communication, reviewing what’s being installed, coordinating deliveries and meetings, and catching problems before they become bigger problems.

I’m always trying to bring solutions to problems instead of just bringing you the problems.

Because things will come up. That’s construction.

The goal is to have someone in your corner who knows how to handle them.

7. Styling + Photos

And then, finally, we get to the fun part.

Once the project is complete, we style the space, bring all of the details together, and—when appropriate—photograph the finished home.

The goal throughout the entire process is simple:

You shouldn’t have to figure all of this out yourself.

You hired a designer so you have someone who can guide you, advocate for you, anticipate what’s coming, and make the thousands of decisions that go into a home feel much more manageable.

That’s the Graceful Interiors process.
